Apps for the weekend
It’s Friday at last, so let’s brief look at some of the best apps doing the rounds this month. So without further ado, here’s our top picks in no particular order…
Letterboxd
Finding a good movie to watch is often a fruitless task. The amount of hours I’ve wasted surfing iTunes and Netflix to find something decent to watch on the weekend is quite embarrassing. Anyone who loves a good movie will be pleased that Letterboxd’s popular web app is now available on iOS.
The app provides a feed of the most popular movies amongst its users, as well as films your friends have watched and if they enjoyed them. If you’ve already seen a movie, you can mark it watched and also leave a review.
Billed as a social network for movies, Letterboxd also lets you browse categories by the most popular items, or just search for a specific item.

Cryptomator
With all the recent hoo-hah about smartphone encryption and security, you might be interested in securing your files and data with a tool like Cryptomator. The company has recently released a new iPhone app which will secure files on your phone before saving them to the cloud service of your choice.
Encrypting your files is just another additional step that to stop anyone from intercepting plain, unencrypted files in transit.
The app works with many of the most popular cloud storage services, such as Dropbox and Google Drive, and supports 256-bit AES security.
Cryptomator is currently only available for desktops and iOS, but we’ve been told an Android version will be available in future.
F.lux
You may have heard of F.lux, a popular iPhone app that can help reduce eye strain when using a smartphone at night. Apple even borrowed the idea for the latest version of iOS with its Night Shift feature. Essentially, the idea is that it reduces the amount of blue light during the evening, which is said to be a more natural colour tone and easier on the eyes. If you spend long hours on a PC or mobile device, it’s worth checking out…
Unfortunately, F.lux only works on Android phones that have been rooted, and may not work on Samsung’s Galaxy device running Android 5 or above, whether they have been rooted or not.
If you already have a rooted device, or are confident in tackling the rooting process, give F.lux a try and you may find you have a better night’s sleep as a result…
