A British snowboarder, buried alive by an avalanche in the French Alps, has been saved by the light from his mobile phone.

Thomas Murphy, 30, had been boarding off-piste in the Deux-Alpes in an area regarded as challenging, but dangerous.

His would-be rescuers rang him and told him to use the light from his mobile to guide the helicopter in.

Really smart! I used the light on my N93 the other day in the darkness, it really is a useful feature.

I’m sure Thomas Murphy will:

a) be delighted he charged his handset before leaving for a day’s snowboarding.
b) be delighted he TOOK his phone with him. Good man!
c) be content he selected a handset that had a decent enough screen to warrant a good level of brightness to guide the helicoper.

I wonder what handset it was, eh?

Whatever, it’s super that he’s been rescued.
