But you're Blyk!
Everytime I hear someone talk about Blyk, the all-new UK mobile operator, I am reminded of the South African Consulate scene in the movie, Lethal Weapon 2. A consulate official is extremely put out that Sargent Murtagh had the balls to try and apply for citizen, objecting with the words “But you’re Blyk!”
Turns out that my memory of that scene needs modifying a little. I always thought the guy pronounced ‘black’ as ‘blyk’ — but it seems to be more along the lines of ‘blohhkk’.
Still, for me, MNVO Blyk will always be associated with Lethal Weapon 2 for me.
Just in case your memory is a little hazy with the movie, here’s the scene in full thanks to Youtube:
And don’t forget, it’s this Monday, baby.
I might even take my laptop and do a Stuart-from-Tech-Digest and blog it live. Could turn into a bit of a race though. I’ll need to take a decent camera too. Last time I was in the same room as the prolific and pleasant Stuart, I was uber impressed at the F***-off huge camera that he brought along. No rubbish £50 one-mega-pixel knock-off from PC World for the chaps at Tech Digest, no thank you. I’ll take along the Canon EOS just in case. Gotta keep up with the Jones’ right?
I have a (possibly) annoying habit of keeping my finger on the trigger of the Canon’s photo button and taking tons of pictures in a row. It makes me feel like a ‘work-the-camera-luv’ photographer, just for a few minutes. Give’us a smile, Pekka.
To get a bit strategic on your ass, I’d like to make the following statement: I think Blyk will be successful. I can feel it in my water. I mean this in the context of the apparent, alleged upcoming Extreme Mobile launch. Blyk have an air of professionalism about them. They’ve got shit hot pictures of their top executives on their about-us page. That takes balls. Point me to another mobile operator brave enough to do this. And from that sort of thing comes a degree of certainty, of confidence. Yes, it’s a bit armchair-psychologist of me, however I think you’d need to reaaaaaally be sure about what you’re doing before agreeing to your employer sticking up a photo together with your job title and bio on the website. If you extrapolate this open and direct attitude, stick it together with an innovative business model, a fresh brand (nice one Marko), smart committed people and a bucketload of investment, then it could well be good news. Hardly a strategic opinion formed on business fact (as I have essentially no facts at all about Blyk apart from the it-might-be-free-ish rumours). In fact it’s pure speculation. I do wish them a fair wind.
I do wonder what exactly Jenni’s doing — she’s got the job title ‘Browsing Business’. Next to her is Marco who’s heading up ‘Browsing Technology’. I’ll need to find out more about that. I’m sure I’ve met Geoff Morley. It was a good while ago when he was at mobile services agency, MindMatics. He’s now sorting out UK Commercial Strategy and Relationships for Blyk.
Ah so there are going to be basic free voice services. That much is accurate based on Timo’s bio. It’s Juha that will get it in the neck from bloggers if the service is abysmal as he’s heading up Member Care.
Bring on Blyk Monday!
