Coaches Chase Recruits Via Instant and Text Messaging

Seton Hall University’s Phyllis Mangina thought she had seen it all in her 20 years as head coach at the school. Then messaging came along. She now carries a BlackBerry, a hand-held device from which she can message recruits.

"These kids live on these things, and you live and die with it," she said. "If a kid is e-mailing and you’ve got to get back to them right away or IM them, this is something you have right at your side, and you have to do it."
