Police will be able to spend more time fighting crime under moves to cite witnesses to court by email and text message to speed up the criminal justice system.

The move follows the revelation that officers and civilian staff spent approximately 100,000 hours last year delivering citations by hand.

Thousands of witnesses will be called to court by letter, email and text in future to make the system more efficient. Traditionally, police officers would be sent to every witness to hand them details of when they are required to be in court.

I think email in particular makes a lot of sense, as long as you can verify who’s sending the mail…
