DVD for mobiles - YEAH BABY, YEAH!

Rok.tv have done a deal to make the first Austin Powers movie available on mobile phones.  Instead of streaming the movie (which could be quite expensive), you can get it on a memory card from www.rokplayer.com. 

Soon you’ll see the movie-memory-card available in various high street shops across the UK and internationally.  Nifty.  I think it’s a cool concept.  If I was ultra bored and about to board a flight to New York, I could well see myself dropping £18 for an impulse buy movie memory card at one of those Dixons tax-free stores at the airport.

Just in case Austin Powers doesn’t rock your boat:

ROK has licensed more than 100 major titles for it’s content portfolio already to include BBC classic comedies such as Little Britain and The Office as well as SpongeBob Squarepants and South Park and other cult movies such as Shawshank Redemption. In addition, ROK has a growing library of music video albums.

It’d be interesting to see how this would work on the train, for example.  You know I might well stick in my headphones and watch a bit of Shawshank to pass the 30 min trip into the city.  Yup I can see that working.  Further, I can potentially see me leaving my ipod at home more frequently. 

I tried out ROK this morning, sat in bed.  Flicked up the N90 and opened up the Rok application and watched one of their demo videos.  It was well produced and pretty good quality.  Get the application on your handset via www.rok.tv.

I felt like holding on to something while the movie streamed though.  It’s just my own negative experiences with mobile data — nothing to do with the ROK experience.  You see I once thought it would be wicked to try out the Windows Mobile streaming radio on my first generation o2 XDA.  I tried it for about 10 minutes then realised I’d used up my entire allocated bandwidth usage for about 3 months. 
Not so with my T-mobile everything-you-can eat (within reason).  I need to get out of the ‘SHIIIIIIIT HOW MUCH IS THIS COSTING??’ mindset.  😉
