Er, right, AQL were apparently the first mobile voip wifi service
Alex forwarded me this note about AQL that he came across on Australia’s Voip News site:
Did we say Mobiboo was the first commercial Voice over Wi-Fi service to be launched in the UK? Well now we’re not so sure we were right about that.
Established in 1999, aql started out life as a provider of internet based services such as hosting and domain registration. It was only later that it diversified to take advantage of the booming VoIP industry.
So all that gossip yesterday about Mobiboo being first was slightly inaccurate. However, AQL, possibly the worst marketed WiFi voip service on the planet (you’d have thought they’d have noticed my article on Mobiboo yesterday and whacked me a mail, no?) is quite a bit different from Mobiboo as the Voip News article discusses. It’s free — at the moment — on WiFi capable Nokias — no monthly charge — and there’s no roaming relationship with the likes of The Cloud. You don’t get a geographic mobile number either, but you can get yourself one for £2.
