Experian report: By 2010 70% of planet will have a mobile

Experian have launched a a free report detailing the usage of mobile phones and some interesting predictions.

There are currently 2.7 billion mobile phones in use and by December 2010, 70% of our global society will carry one cellular phone. (i)

According to a recent mobile industry analysis Experian Consumer Research conducted, mobile phone usage is extending beyond typical communication functions to enter mobile banking, searches and social networks areas. Therefore creating a powerful new channel through which marketing, promotional and advertising messages can be effectively delivered to individual consumers.

Whenever I read these kinds of statistics — 70% of the planet — I can’t help but think about people in Burma, for example, who are having a difficult time actually eating, let alone deciding what mobile phone to buy.

So, 70% will have a mobile by 2010? Cool. Just how bad will life be for the other 30%?

More and more, I reckon I need to be getting out to the poorest of the poor, helping them earn a living and kitting them out with the right technology to enable them to compete in the global economy.
