Gosh, are Three about to really deliver?

I’ve been looking at Three’s X-Series in detail (in fact that link there is the link to the X-Series blog). A blog. Yes, that’s right! A mobile operator actually engaging!

For so long I’ve been extremely frustrated with Three’s strategy. Stupid data prices and absolutely neolithic walled garden approaches have been a thorn in my side whenever I’ve picked up my Three handset and wanted to do anything interesting with it. It’s been a constant disappointment — data access and services are very important to me. While I think they’ve certainly done a phenomenal job with with mobile services including the liks of SeeMeTV and their MusicStore, I’ve felt they’ve been missing the key ingredient — open internet access at a reasonable cost. When you combine their existing mobile offerings with open internet access, the whole thing becomes exceptionally valuable. To me, at least.

I’ve got their latest N73 — one of their flagship phones — and I’ve stopped walking about with it. The trouble being that I take a 3.2 megapixel picture and… woosh… that’s almost half a meg if I want to upload it. Which doesn’t work because ShoZu is mysteriously ‘disabled’. So I end up bluetoothing any images to my laptop and totally bypassing Three. Gahhh. Sooooo annoying.

But, there’s hope. I’m really excited for them.

Let’s leave it there, eh? I’ll wait until the X-Series stuff is actually operational and give it a go. Could even see myself migrating from T-Mobile to Three….
