How to unlock your Blackberry Bold 9000

I have unlocked by Vodafone Blackberry Bold.

Yes, dear reader, I stumped up the cash to experiment on your behalf.

Over the weekend, I thought, ‘Hmmm, I wonder if you can easily unlock a Bold?’

You see, my Vodafone Blackberry Bold was racking up the roaming fees until I switched it off in a fit of annoyance that I’m still being charged at 1999 rates. When Vodafone OWNS half of Verizon.

(I don’t give a toss that Verizon is on CDMA, surely some smart executive at Vodafone can fix this? Or are the 1.49/min revenues simply too good to miss?)

So I switched my device off the moment I arrived.

Turns out a lot of people have been texting me.

And the trouble with being sent text messages when you’re in the States is you’re billed stupid, stupid rates for them.

So if you are texting me while I’m in the States, please could you attach a $10,000 cheque/check with each incoming message to cover the processing costs?

I wondered if it was possible to unlock the Bold and use it as my primary handset here in San Francisco. Right now I’m using my unlocked T-Mobile UK G1 with a T-Mobile USA sim. Does the job perfectly.

I did a search.

I came across this Youtube video from Cellunlock.net.

I watched the video.

The demo worked. Their Rogers Bold was unlocked really easily.

I reasoned that anyone who’d put this much effort into making a video wouldn’t bullshit me and take money off me without delivering a decent service.

Turns out I was right.

I got the unlock code in about 5 minutes after submitting my IMEI number.

Total genius.

I wanted to let you know that it worked for me.

Here are the carriers they support:

I paid $29 Canadian Dollars for the privilege and I’m entirely content.
