Informa predicts sharp upturn in mobile ad spending

A strategic report released by Informa Telecoms and Media, entitled “Mobile Advertising Services: Generating revenue through subsidised content,” predicts the next 12 months will mark the beginning of a sharp upturn in mobile advertising spend. It predicts this will be aided by the proliferation of cheap, high-quality multimedia handsets and the widespread availability of high-speed mobile networks.
Potentially good news for anyone involved in or connected to the medium.
The report stated that a survey conducted as part of the research found consumers were open to mobile advertising in some forms, but not via SMS text message. The report stated that customers would be more willing to accept advertising in return for free media and applications on their handsets.
Now one would have assumed that consumers would be open to receiving advertising via text. But perhaps not. Perhaps, as Alex put it in a recent mail to me, spams & scams have made people less accepting of SMS advertising. Plus it’s quite a personal medium. I’m ok to have a few trusted companies sending me updates by text, but I don’t want 100 texts a day in my inbox advertising things.
