MMS -- a turning point in my experience
So I was out last night with some friends from University. It’s been years since we all met up together at the same time. We went to an upmarket bowling alley (All Star Lanes) in Bloomsbury and had a great time. Although I’ve damaged my right arm when I was trying to get a strike so now I feel like I’ve got some sort of RSI.
Either way I can still type. I can still text.
We did a lot of bowling then retired to the tables and ordered an array of delicious burgers. Whilst I was sat there, one of our party burst out laughing. We all looked and saw him staring at his mobile. The interesting bit? It wasn’t a text message he was reading… he’d just received a picture message from a friend. It was a funny one. He showed it to each of us. Something about a competition for mothers day… ‘Enter your mum now’ said the strap line. 😉 Cue schoolboy sniggering around our table.
In another age, this would have been sent by email. In fact I’m surprised it wasn’t. But I’m delighted that the medium of MMS, stupidly expensive as it is, is being used more and more.
In order to elicit that laugh of entertainment, quite a few things had to work: handsets had to be configured, networks had to be operational and so on. In my experience it’s rare to see the technology working end-to-end properly unless both parties have just walked out of the mobile operator’s shop each with a new handset.
Although I regularly read statistics and reports showing the uptake of MMS, it’s often hard to believe when you’re out with friends and regularly hear MMS-is-a-load-of-crap stories.
Anyway, a turning point in my experience? Here’s hoping!
