Mobile Phone Gaming is Sony Ericsson's Last Frontier?

PSP Phone MockupSony’s a big company with a handful of different brands for consumer products. The big ones include Walkman, Cyber-shot, Bravia, and Playstation. What’s the oddball in the bunch? Playstation is – it’s the only one that hasn’t been put on a mobile handset – yet. Sony Computer Entertainment Exec Jim Ryan recently stated, “The Playstation is a proven success and so is Sony Ericsson. Convergence with the two arms working together is definitely plausible.” Not exactly crystal clear statements, but it would make total sense for Sony Ericsson to develop a Playstation Mobile Platform for their handsets.

Imagine not just one Playstation Phone, but a Playstation Mobile line, with several different form factors. I imaging that it will also connect your mobile handset with the console and handheld Playstation platforms. For instance, you could increase the stats of your Tiger Woods golfer on your mobile while taking the tube, and then have those stats synced so that when you get home, your player is already shaving a few strokes off his game.

I definitely think Sony is well positioned to bring out their own mobile gaming product line, but it would also make sense for them to be waiting to see how the other mobile giant does. Remember that Nokia’s second attempt at the Ngage platform is set to launch [slightly delayed] in December of this year. What do you think, will Sony create just one Playstation phone, or develop a whole PSPhone lineup?
