Nat Semi plans instant handset charge facility

This could be the electrical equivalent of the oasis in the middle of the desert for me: An instant charge service for my handset!

Yes, National Semiconductor’s Chief Executive, Brian Halla, has seen the light, reports Reuters:

“We’ll try to be the first company with an instant charge capability in a handset. You plug it in a wall and it’s charged,” Halla told the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York.

“Probably we’ll be showing something within the next 12 calendar months …. We have a pretty aggressive R&D campaign going on to make this possible,” he said.

Halla said that rather than go into the phone charger business, National Semiconductor, which generates more than a third of its revenue from wireless, would look to sell the technology to existing phone charger suppliers.

I can’t tell you how valuable this function would be to me. I can imagine sticking my credit card in a slot, ATM style, then immediately charging up my phone.
