Nokia makes 2 calls into 1

Nokia Siemens Networks have been trialling software upgrades to cellsite basestations and basestation controllers that allow 2 calls per timeslot instead of 1 by using OSC (Orthogonal Sub Channel) technology.

This allows GSM operators to double the voice capacity of their networks by just installing new software. This means extended network without spending more on network expansion – thus also not increasing their carbon footprints.

Phones shouldn’t require modifications and call quality is unaffected.

Nokia hope to roll-out the technology in 2010.
