Phling launches mobile music storage locker service

This looks rather smart. Using Amazon’s S3 storage back-end, Phling lets users upload all their music from their computers — and then stream it on their mobile phone. Smart. Very smart indeed. Like Mp3tunes or meTracks. No cost, either, at the moment. I’m not clear on just how much data you can upload — but you’ll definitely be wanting a mobile data bundle for the streaming.

More from the announcement today:

The phling! MusicStash lets a phling! subscriber stream music they already own to their mobile phone from their home PC even when its turned off! Leveraging Amazon Web Services as the storage medium, the phling! MusicStash is a user’s personal storage ‘locker” where they can upload and store favorite music tracks for anytime playback via their mobile phone.

Oxy Systems’ President and CEO, Mike Krasner, said, ‘We successfully launched the phling! MusicLounge service in Switzerland last year on the Orange, Swisscom Mobile, and Sunrise mobile networks in partnership with Edipresse, the French language media giant. Since then we have listened to the feedback from our subscribers and are now revealing the MusicStash service, which meets the needs of those subscribers who prefer to turn off their PC while away from the home.”

Continuing, Krasner added, ‘With our focus firmly on usability and our users, we strive to continually add new features and capabilities to the phling! mobile music suite. Critically, we let users listen, share and discover music via the mobile device, however we’re particularly proud of the fact that unlike other services, phling! gives consumers access to the music they already own as well as to indie bands’ music and Internet radio.”

Currently available to all subscribers at no extra charge, the phling! MusicStash uses an easy and intuitive PC user interface to let users select the artists and albums they want to upload to, or delete from, their personal stash. The uploaded music files are stored securely on the Amazon Web Services servers and are available upon demand by the user using their phling! enabled phone.
