Rave Wireless targets student safety with GPS
The interestingly named Rave Wireless is targeting the spread of GPS into mobile phones with a new products designed to keep students safe on campus. The system allows students to share their location and other information with campus staff whenever they feel in danger or unsafe, using their mobile.
Students can hit a panic button if they hit trouble, automatically alerting campus staff to where they are, or set a timer to put the alert on standby. If the student feels uncomfortable, they can set the alert to go off after a certain time has elapsed. If they make it home without trouble, they can switch off the system before the staff are alerted or if no action is taken, the staff will receive a notification of the student’s location information.
Rave Wireless says it provides “best available” student location information to campus police, using GPS data access, with details sent directly to staff Windows Mobiles. It’s good to see some interesting location-aware applications coming out of the increase in GPS mobiles.
