Recommendations for a mobile e-book reader?

Had a note in from Steve at iTagg enquiring as to what he should use as a mobile reader — software and device. I wondered if anyone has any suggestions?

Whilst browsing for a piece of trivia (I’d say Googling for it but I fear being sued by big google brother) I came across a cool site that has the full texts of all of George Orwell’s writings. Some are just wonderful, like his essay from 1946 entitled “a nice cup of tea” – great for those of us who believe in the small rituals of making a “nice cup of tea”.

Anyway, on the spur of the moment I decided I want to read 1984 (yes, connection with above google remark was deliberate!) and have decided I want to make it my reading for when I am mobile – but without the need to carry a paper book.

So, please chuck your suggestions to me as to the various methods of taking the text and putting into an e-reader. I have various mobile devices, ipods, blackberrys, etc at my disposal so all suggestions welcome. I will then happily report on the experience of using such a method for reading a full book.

I used to use the Compaq iPaq’s built in Microsoft Reader software to read books. I read the original text of Dracula entirely on the device when I was in the tube — it was a pretty good experience. Just checked out the official Reader site and they’ve got a ton of books available there.

There must be quite a few readers available for mobile and for the likes of Blackberry. My recommendation for Steve would be to start hunting for a Blackberry reader first — as that device has the biggest screen.

Thoughts?
