RIM: 2 new Bold devices, Facebook app & video calling for PlayBook

Here are the highlights from today’s press conference at BlackBerry World:

– Video chat on the PlayBook
The PlayBook will get video calling capability (between PlayBooks) via WiFi. If you’re lucky enough to have a PlayBook, you’ll get this update over-the-air later today.

– Facebook on the PlayBook
There are over 30 million users of the Facebook for BlackBerry smartphone platform — and RIM is expanding this to the PlayBook platform to, ‘offer a highly engaging social experience optimised for PlayBook’. This will be available later this week from BlackBerry App World.

– Two new BlackBerry Bolds
The BlackBerry Bold range gets the 9900 and 9930 additions, both running BlackBerry OS 7 — I’ll re-publish the press release in full once I get it. Key points: Ultra thin (10.5mm), brushed stainless steel frame, 8GB on-board memory, 1.2GHz processor, touch screen, 4G/HSPA+, NFC, Augmented Reality, HD Video, BlackBerry OS 7. The web browser is apparently significantly enhanced in BBOS7, HTML5 support. They’ll also get premium versions of Docs To Go enabled out-of-the-box.

To allow personal use of BlackBerry smartphones without compromising company security or personal privacy. This is really smart and should keep a lot of the world’s CIOs happy.

And then two more key enterprise announcements:

– RIM announces BlackBerry Mobile Voice System 5 with Voice Over WiFi Calling for Avaya and Legacy Nortel Communications Systems — that’s going to be relevant to you if you’ve got a BlackBerry estate and Avaya/Nortel

– RIM announces multi-platform BlackBerry Enterprise solution for Smartphones and Tablets — this is going to be useful for any companies that want to properly manage and secure their mobile devices (including Android and iOS devices)
