Samsung, South Korea’s biggest business, is at the centre of a bribes scandal after being accused by one of its former legal executives of operating large-scale slush funds from a secret pool with the equivalent of £50m.
Kim Yong-cheol, ex-head of one of Samsung’s legal divisions, alleged on live television in Seoul that the country’s flagship electronics conglomerate had regularly bribed prosecutors, tax officials, politicians and bureaucrats to avoid investigations into the way chairman Lee Kun-hee ran the business and was trying to pass control to his sons.
