SAP CIO, Oliver Bussman: My top 5 takeaways from the iPhone 5 launch

What does SAP’s Chief Information Officer, Oliver Bussman, make of the iPhone 5? I thought it would be rather interesting to see what he thought given his company’s domination of the enterprise technology stack (and, increasing focus on enterprise mobility). I asked Oliver to give us his perspective in the form of some quick takeaways. Here we go:

– – – – –

1. Lighter, faster, bigger screen, enhanced colors, increased camera capabilities—it’s evolution like this that excites consumers, and in turn leads to wider adoption in the enterprise. The future desktop will be a mobile one. That’s what we believe at SAP.

2. Like with the 4S launch, iPhone 5 will drive expansion in the digital ecosystem, setting off another wave of devices, and fueling app developers. But this new phone also opens up the 4S to more people as Apple lowers the price on that model.

3. With the new LTE connection option, people will probably start to caution against increased data usage. But this is something that companies should have been preparing for already. Data consumption is exploding – there’s no sense in resisting.

4. The continued refinement of the home screen means room for another row of apps. This will undoubtedly include apps that assist workers and business travelers with real-time mobility enabling people work more efficiently and make better, faster decisions.

5. The iPhone 5 is great, and we plan on deploying it at SAP this month. That said, there are other great devices on the market – we support iPhone, BlackBerry, and Android for our employees – so it’s still important for IT decision-makers to offer options for their employees. One might love the iPhone 5, but another might want something else. In the end, it’s about working easier so let employees choose the device they think will be best for them.

Nice one Oliver. Thank you for taking the time to give us your perspective!
