Singapore Airlines implements text updates for all customers

Expect to hand over your mobile details to Singapore Airlines on your next flight with the airline after the launch of their new mobile alert service which will inform passengers via text message if their flight is being re-timed.  The new service was created in a bid to minimise the inconvenience caused to customers in the event of a significant change in flight time known ahead of departure.

Customers will receive a text message on their mobile phone from the Airline indicating the new flight time, and the text message will be sent between three and 48 hours prior to the original flight time.

I really don’t get why this isn’t a feature on every airline. I often find myself fillng in my mobile number when I’m booking flights — although I’ve never actually got a text from an airline.

Going further, I’d really like a text message saying ‘Hi, your flight SAL1287 is currently on time with no reported issues. Have a safe flight!’ — for the 3p cost, it’s a nice thing to do, right? I’d like to get a greeting text like that on the day of my flight. OR it’d be nice for the airline to send me out the whole specs — you know, terminal 3, gate 20, or whatever… and give me the critical info that I need on my handset, just in case. Booking references, stuff like that.
