SMS Text News sends flowers to Stephen Fry

untitled-6

Every week we send flowers to someone in or connected with the mobile industry. No specific reason, other than because we think they’re deserving. Last week the recipient was Paul Magelli who’d just sold his company to Nokia. Previous to that, it was Hugh from mobile messaging giant, MBlox.

This week we thought comedian, writer, actor, humourist, novelist, columnist, filmmaker, television personality AND mobile geek, Stephen Fry, deserved a visit from the SMS Text News Flower Fairy!

He outed himself as a 100% Class-A geek last September with this post on his newly introduced blog dissecting the apparent magnificence of the Apple iPhone. I’m a huge fan — and was thus delighted to find that he was thoroughly well informed when it came to wireless and technology issues. The post was so well received that The Guardian newspaper phoned him up and they’ve now got him writing on technology each week (“Welcome to Dork Talk“, definitely worth a read).

On my post back in September announcing this, I posed the following questions that I was going to see if I could pitch to his agent for an answer. After a lot of reading of Stephen’s blog, I think I’ve got the answers though…!

1. What was your first mobile handset — I’m willing to bet it was a car phone or something like that. One of the first, too.
2. What is your current mobile handset — and why [I’m reasonably confident he’s on an iPhone, although from his blog, it’s clear he’s trying a lot of different handsets regularly. Good man]
3. Which network provider do you use? What’s your current device strategy? — I suspect his iPhone is AT&T, based on his blog comments.
4. Out of every handset you’ve owned, which has been your favourite? — Must be the iPhone
5. What do you use your handset for? Calling/texting/data…? — I reckon he’s a prolific user of most handset functions — particularly given his recent blog post, Chasing the perfect smartphone.

The Flower Fairy flies again next week. If you’ve got a suggestion for someone in and around the industry who you reckon deserves flowers, email me — and we’ll take care of it.
