Sprint SMS goes up to 20 cents

US mobile operator Spring have very kindly decided to up their text message rate, about a year after they last did it. However, things are slightly different this time – if you don’t like the price increase they’re not going to let you terminate your contract early without penalty charges.

The new rate of 20 cents – compared to the previous rate of 10 cents, apparently brings no difference in quality of service. Sprint are also saying that “SMS isn’t covered by your contract because it is an opt-in service; this is the same reason why they can raise the price of caller ID or voicemail without voiding your contract.”
