Quartz: I was already a convert to the Quartz newsletter, but the app is something really interesting. I really like how they are reshaping how we consume news. The news is delivered in a text message format and it uses emojis and gifs superbly. It feels human and although may seem like a novelty, I think it has long-term potential.
RTE News Now: I used to live abroad and the RTE app was like a lifeline for staying in touch with what was going on at home. It’s well structured, easy to follow and the news team are thoughtful when sending push notifications, unlike lots of companies.
FlightRadar24: This makes me sound like an absolute geek, but I find this app kind of hypnotic. Point it at the sky and you’ll get information on whatever flight is above you at the time. It’s fascinating that information is out there.
Deep Sleep with Andrew Johnson: As much as I like to think I’m being mindful and everything, there are some nights when I’m wide awake and struggle to sleep. I discovered the Deep Sleep app a few years ago and find it really helpful. It’s a guided journey to sleep, Andrew Johnson’s voice is super relaxing and I find it works for me.
Hailo: This is a taxi app that takes the experience further. I can use it to call or pre-order a taxi, it sends a push notification when the car arrives, automatically emails on your bill and gives you easy-to-share discounts. It’s so convenient and their branding is great.
Google Photos: I’ve started to convert everyone I know after seeing the benefits of Google Photos for myself. I’ve had a gmail account for years, so this is a natural extension. It’s simple to use, backs up all of your pictures effortlessly and they are then available across all devices. Perhaps the best bit is the automatic animations provided.
Spotify: I use it every, single, day. The listen offline option is handy but, it’s the algorithmically-charged Discover Weekly that really pops. Spotify delivers a newly curated list every week based on your listening habits. It doesn’t always sparkle, but it’s always interesting.
Honourable mentions: Slack would definitely make this list, if it was the top 8. It’s simple to use, intuitive and handy for keeping in touch when out of the office.
