Voicemail issues

When you ring my mobile, and I don’t answer within about 3 rings, you’re immediately diverted to my office where the call is duly answered. They do their best to ring me again to see if I’m (10 seconds later) not busy, most of the time though, their divert fails and they have to take a message.

The message is then emailed (or texted) to me. Perfectly fine as I get the email immediately on my E61.

However, after 6pm, if you call and I miss your call, well………… I need to wait until the morning until the girls have transcribed the messages for me to find out what you were after.

I need my handset to swap to divert automatically during the day, when I’ve got a ton of calls coming through, to my office. THEN after 6pm, when the call volume tends to diminish, the device should divert to voicemail. Similarly at the weekend.

It’s just a total arse at the moment.

What’s your record missed calls in an afternoon? I was busy the whole afternoon the other day and had missed calls from 17 unique numbers but at least 45 actual phone calls. I swear some people think I’m trying to wind them up by not answering and the call diverting to the office.

So here’s what I want. I want someone to take my mobile number and allow me to manage it properly. I have had enough of the stupid limitations offered by the existing mobile operators.

You have to wonder why, in what, 10 years, we haven’t had ANY sort of innovation when it comes to diversion. The menu on my Nokia N93 is exactly the same as its on my Motorola StarTac or my Sony Ericsson CMD-Z5. That’s ridiculous. I can DIVERT ALL, DIVERT IF BUSY and whatnot. That’s it.

Why hasn’t this been improved? Why hasn’t someone realised that a subset of their customers will pay a few quid extra for advanced voice management services?

Ah well. Probably too late, now. A new breed will come along, I’m sure, and knock’em all for six.

It’s not going to take much.

Wire up most of London with proper working wireless internet, add in some open source devices allowing you to put whatever you want on them, easily — and very quickly, the concept of a traditional mobile operator goes out the window. It could happen very, very quickly. I hope so.

How crap is our mobile infrastructure that I have to make manual changes to my call divert?
