What's that, a foldable iPhone you say?

I picked up this one from Wayne and Qianer over at The Information earlier today and it prompted me to reach for Mobile Industry Review.

Hello dear reader, it’s been a while.

A foldable iPhone, you say?

Interesting.

Of course this is something we’ve all speculated about for the longest time, but it’s interesting that The Information feels confident enough to report the detail.

Apple has apparently been talking to suppliers.

What kind of foldable?

Well, I’d speculate something similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6:

Or maybe like the slightly naff DALL-E version I’ve knocked up for the feature image:

Or…

This feels like a good ‘time’ (ok, next, next year) for Apple to begin to experiment with models that would actually reach the public.

I say that because if you’ve taken a look at the previous or current Galaxy devices, the quality is pretty much perfect nowadays.

Yes, there will always be issues with folding screens – certainly as the technology continues to improve. I wonder how any of the first or second generation Zs are holding up with constant use?

This year — with the release of the Z Fold 6 — is when I have genuinely considered buying one to replace my Ultra. It’s just been a little too experimental in the past for my preferences, especially when you’re dropping near on 2,000 GBP or thereabouts.

A foldable iPhone, though?

What will that retail for?

If you’re spending on average something like, 1,300 GBP for the existing single-screen model, does that mean that, given the ‘Apple tax’, we’ll see the foldable come to market for something like 2,500 GBP?

I’d need to serious consideration for that level of spend, especially when you’ve got a perfectly fantastic M3 (or M5, by that time?) laptop retailing at less than half the cost.

That said, it’s the device you use most often, right?

And if you can justify replacing your iPad .. (or at least, justifying it to your wife/partner), then maybe it could work.

But goodness me make sure you insure it…

Anyway. Exciting. Something potentially new.

Meanwhile, let us wait for the iPhone 16, then 17… then we might get a foldable? We shall see…
