Just as the iPhone 16 memes had started to fly, Huawei announced their triple-fold Huawei Mate XT.

Quite a few outlets linked to this Nikkei article containing a shot of the device and news that 1.3M Huawei fans had placed reservations over the last 7 hours or so.

Then Fortune reported earlier that the figure was nearer 3M orders and linked to this Weibo post from Huawei's Richard Yu teasing the phone. They linked to the Vmall listing for the phone. Here's a screenshot (with Google Chrome English translate enabled):

So, 3.2M orders so far.

I'm not surprised.

If you're a Huawei fan – something I've always been – then I can imagine making a 'reservation' now, with more details due to be released tomorrow – makes very good sense.

Especially when Apple had next to nothing to report, as far as mainstream media was concerned.

Here's how The Telegraph in the UK reported Apple's amazing launch... right down the bottom of the front page... leading on AirPods acting as hearing aids. It didn't warrant a photo:

There was nothing on The Daily Mail front page. Nothing. Nothing on The Times front page yet. And The Guardian carried this at the bottom of the front page:

If Apple had released a 3-screen folding iPhone, this would have been headline news.

So well done Huawei. Well done for innovating. Well done for thinking different.

I am looking forward to seeing the specifications for the Mate XT. The Register reckons it will cost around $2,400. I'm not surprised.

But three screens? Wow. If I could bring myself to ignore that this is the same cost as 2x MacBook Airs then I would certainly think very carefully about buying one.

And in case you were wondering about those iPhone memes, I saw this one on LinkedIn earlier from Linas Bellunas:
