Could 5G be on its way in Korea?

A while back I wrote a piece of PR tripe which concluded that the only missing piece in mobile gaming is 4G. There was, I wrote, no point in having really powerful phones that could run them if you had to pay a fortune to download them.

3G is fine for looking at email and even (just about) checking Facebook. But you’re never going to download more than a cut down version of FIFA soccer unless it’s quick and cheap to do so.

WiFi is great but it is still illegal to use someone elses wireless point (even an open one) without their permission. So that still leaves you downloading games at home when you’re less interested and Eastenders or the West Wing is more likely to distract you.

Now, it appears that 4G is about to have a small amount of cash thrown its way in South Korea. $58.4m will be pluinged into advancing 4G access and beginning to work of 5G. With 4G alone download speeds of 10Mbps (WiMax / WiBro) or 100Mbps (LTE) should be possible making the Pacific republic the top ranked cellphone producer in the world.

It should be warned that sources I’ve spoken to have no idea what 5G is going to give but it’s good that it’s getting cash anyway.
